The experience Leona gained as an MP and cabinet minister during her two terms as an MP (2008 to 2015) will allow her to hit the ground running as Nunavut’s MP in 2019.
Leona’s top priority will be to allow Nunavummiut to keep more money in their pockets by lowering the cost of living:
-eliminating the carbon tax which has raised the cost of air travel, consumer goods, shipping, hunting and home ownership
Housing - no more band aid solutions!
Leona will be the champion of a comprehensive strategy to tackle Nunavut’s grave housing crisis and restore well being, health and safety for families living in overcrowded housing:
- including transition housing, elders’ housing and housing for those with special needs
Leona will support the training of Inuit mental health workers, and territorial and community-based healing and wellness programs to tackle the current crisis of suicide and crimes of violence in Nunavut.
Pressing Infrastructure Needs in All of Nunavut
Leona will make sure no community is left out of a plan to address pressing marine and infrastructure needs in all of Nunavut’s communities:
- marine, air and road transportation needs
- affordable internet for all Nunavut communities
- continued support for Kivalliq Fibre Optic and Hydro line and Grays Bay Port and Road in Kitikmeot
